Promoting a business online has become one of the more powerful ways to powered by ausweb a business. Part of the allure is it is relatively inexpensive when compared with other forms of advertising like newspapers, television, radio and phone books. Another positive is that it is extremely targeted especially when using search engines to market a business. If a person is searching for something and finds a website that answers their question then that site has a good chance of making a sale to someone. The process of ranking a site highly like that is known as search engine optimization or SEO.

When thinking of SEO the first thing you need to think about is keywords. Keywords are the terms that people type into the search engines when looking for something. This can be anything from looking for a plumber to looking for new tires on their car. That can be taken even further because they may want to find the cheapest tires or the most reliable plumber in a certain geographic area. The longer the term they type into the search box, the more specific their needs and the more likely they are to need something in the short term. These are known as buying terms or long-tailed terms. Not only are they more powerful, they are easier to rank on. They may not get thousands of searches a month, but they can result in more sales. A million people searching for cars every month may not yield as much profit as 1000 people searching for an affordable car in Chicago each month. The second example is more direct and focused.

One of the most powerful forms of promotion for a business, service or  today is leveraging the Internet. It is a marketing dream because it never tires, works all day and promotes all over the world. But, it is only effective if used the correct way. There are many ways to use the Internet to promote a business, but one of the most powerful ways is through search engine optimization, or SEO. Ranking a website in the top of the search engines brings targeted traffic to your business like no other form of promotion can.

It is important to understand a little about the process of SEO if you are looking to promote your site online. This is important whether you plan on trying to do it on your own, or if you are looking to hire someone to do this task for you.

One of the most important steps to SEO is keyword selection. You need to sit down and think of all the various things a person could type into a search engine when looking for your business or the product or service you provide. Try to come up with a list of about 10 different phrases. Once that is complete, you can take that list and expand it. A good way to do this is to add buying words to these phrases. For example, if you are plumber you can add words like : best, cheap, affordable, reliable and others. This accomplishes a few things. One it puts you in position to rank on words where people are looking for something specific. Also, it gives you easier phrases to rank on that have less competition. Trying to rank on “plumber” would be very difficult. However, trying to rank for “best plumber in Dallas” would not be nearly as difficult.

After you have selected some words you will need to have content written that highlights these phrases. You will want to have a piece of content written for each important phrase. That is because you can rank multiple pages in your site on each of these keywords. That gives you more saturation on the Web for various words. You do not want to stuff your content with these phrases, however. If you do that, the search engines will pick up on the fact you are trying to fool them and may disregard your content. A good rule is to use about a two percent word density. So, if your content is 200 words, do not use your phrase more than 4 times in the content.

Search engine optimization is a great way to promote a business or service. Being able to bring hungry, targeted buyers to a website that fulfills exactly what they need is a business owner’s dream. By placing a site right in front of a person who has a problem or issue they need a solution for you are hitting them right at the moment they are looking to buy something and it greatly reduces the buying cycle.

Years ago you were able to build your website and once it was uploaded to your powered by ausweb there wasn’t a great deal required to get it to the front page of the search engines and consequently gain traffic i.e. visitors to your site.

However, today the number of websites trying to rank their website on page 1 of Google has become more and more competitive, resulting in more work being required to obtain that prized status of number one.

But having said that, there are a number of things that you can do to give your website a boost in the rankings and that entails getting the best benefits from your search engine optimization (SEO).

There are two different types of search engine optimization known as on page SEO and off page SEO, both requiring different approaches.

We aren’t going to address on page SEO in this article which is basically doing a certain number of tweaks to your website pages to ensure that they meet the criteria for a good website as defined by Google and other search engines.

Instead let’s take a look at what off page SEO entails, and in particular some of the best ways to build backlinks to your webpage’s. It has long been recognized that search engines rank sites higher that are perceived to be popular and this popularity is measured by certain algorithms – which are constantly updated and changed by search engines, I am sure you are familiar with references to the Google Panda and Penguin updates, and the fact that many sites supposedly not meeting the those requirements lost their page ranking and many plummeted down to deep dark depths.

But not everyone was affected and this substantiates in a lot of cases that they had made the effort to have quality backlinks pointing to their website that gave the appearance of being natural i.e. not hundreds of spammy links created by software.

So what do you do when you have a new site that you want to get ranked?

Once you have got your site uploaded and indexed you can start off by doing blog comments making sure that you only link to your root domain in the first instance. Write about 3 a day until you have built up a base of 40-50 links pointing to your site. This will give a similar appearance to natural link building. It’s not hard to find good quality blogs to write a comment for by just doing a search for your specialised niche or topic.

It’s worthwhile making the extra effort to write a quality comment that adds some value to the blog rather than something like “nice site” to make sure your comment gets approved.

Once you have your initial links built you can look at other options for finding quality links, it’s not unusual at this stage to prepare and submit a press report this can result in getting you in front of lots of traffic very quickly and give a boost to your ranking in a short time.

However on a more long term basis you need to think about building links from other properties like web2.0 sites, wiki’s, article directories, video sites and many more. Whilst this can be done manually a lot of people choose to either use automated software or seek the services of a search engine optimization service to help them with their link building.

Particularly since the concern of being de-indexed because of poor quality links, whichever way you choose to build your backlinks – just keep in mind without backlinks your site just won’t rank in that special spot on the front page.

Internet marketers are very familiar with the need to use good search engine powered by ausweb in each individual post or article they write. Without good SEO, Google will not send the traffic they need to be successful.

Over the years search engine optimization has become more and more sophisticated. This has been necessary in order to keep up with the technological advancements of Google and other search engines.

Gone are the days when marketers could get by with using a targeted keyword phrase in the title of an article, and then loading the page with the same keyword phrase over and over again. Worse, these pages often contained no information at all; they were pages filled with nothing but links to affiliate sites.

Those marketers found that the search engines sent them so much traffic that they could still make a boat load of money from the 1% or 2% of the visitors who would click through on one of their many affiliate links and make a purchase.

It is easy to appreciate why Google needed to do a better job of understanding where they were sending traffic. Would you continue to use Google if every time you searched for something you were sent to a link farm? Do you like to be sent to a page that offers absolutely no information about the subject of your search? Of course not. No one does.

As technology improved, Google started learning how to separate sites that had informative content from those that were abusing the system. They started learning how to identify articles with original content. They started rewarding articles that included words and phrases that were related to the title of the post. They also stopped sending traffic to sites that repeated keyword phrases over and over and over.

As Google became even more advanced they started looking for and identifying excessive affiliate links. They also started noticing the number of ads that were placed inside an article — and where in the article the ads were placed.

Today Internet marketers have learned that practicing good search engine optimization really means providing informative content that is relative to the keywords in the article title. They have also learned that the article cannot be copied and that the article should be filled with words and phrases that are related to the subject.

Some feel that Google wants to get rid of Internet marketers. According to Google, however, all they want to do is to send the people using their service to websites that provide what they are looking for. After all, when you use Google, that’s what you expect. Everyone wants to be sent to a website that that answers a specific question or solves a specific problem.

So when you are preparing articles or posts for your websites or blogs, just remember to think like Google thinks. Make sure that you provide relative and informative content. That is the first rule of good search engine optimization.
